You’ve got two questions that are distinct; I would ike to simply just just take one at any given time. First, formal language, as all interaction, has got to be embedded in a context; it can not be taught in isolation. Formal language in essence is just a formal register; frequently it’s described as educational language or the language of college. Stated another method, formal language or register is a method of message and writing that fits the situation or task, market, as well as in college, the content area. An informal register, as a precursor to writing an editorial response on the same topic for a school newspaper or website, a more formal register for example, in teaching ELLs about argument, have them craft an e-mail disagreeing with a friend’s position on an issue.
